Thunderstorms & Lightning

We’ve seen them a lot lately… rain, thunder, and lightning.  Sometimes these storms can get pretty intense and cause damage to your home.  Every thunderstorm produces lightning, and lightning is one of the top three storm-related killers in the U.S.  Dangers of thunderstorms can include tornadoes, hail, floods, and strong winds, all of which can wreak havoc on your property.  Luckily, Swartz Contracting is here to get you back to normal while working with your through the entire recovery process.  Let’s review what FEMA.com suggests you should do to be prepared for thunderstorms:

Before:

  • Build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan.
  • Postpone any planned outdoor activities.
  • 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Also, stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • If you are outdoors and not near a building, get into a vehicle, which is safer than being outdoors.
  • Close and shutter windows, close all doors, curtains, and blinds.
  • Try to unplug electronics before the storm arrives.

During:

  • Use a battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates.
  • Avoid using corded phones.
  • Avoid electrical equipment and cords (unplugging them will help prevent damage from power surges).
  • Avoid contact with plumbing and stay away from windows and doors (definitely off porches).
  • Take shelter in a sturdy building.
  • Avoid contact with metal.
  • If driving in heavy rain, pull over until heavy rain ends.

After:

  • If lightning strikes you or someone around you, call 911.
    • If the person struck is not breathing, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
    • If the person’s heart has stopped, perform CPR.
    • If they have a pulse and are breathing, look for possible injuries
  • Never drive through flooded roadways.
  • Avoid storm-damaged areas.
  • Help people in need of assistance.
  • Listen for any instructions on your NOAA Weather Radio.

Storm damage can range from a tree falling on your home, a roof leak, or flood damage.  Swartz Contracting is a full-service restoration company that will stay on your project from start to finish, even helping to work with your insurance company.  To learn more, visit us at www.SwartzContracting.com, or find us on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, and LinkedIn.

Tornadoes

Unfortunately, it’s that time of year again when many areas around the country are hit with unforgiving tornadoes.  Though they are most common in and around Tornado Alley (e.g., Oklahoma or Texas), they hit our area too!  It is important to know how to handle an emergency before, during, and after because we all know that these storms can level buildings of any size and send just about anything flying through the sky as if it were weightless.  Keep you and your family safe with a solid plan in advance.  According to FEMA.com, here are some helpful tips to consider:

Before:

  • Make a family plan within your household
    • How will you communicate if you are not together?
    • Go over plans that are in place at work or school.
    • Make sure everyone knows what to do and where to go when a warning is issued.
    • Download a FEMA Family Emergency Plan.
  • Make an emergency kit
    • Food, Water, Basic Supplies/Essentials to survive for 72 hours.
  • Be alert, watch for storms, and listen to any instructions and warnings given by emergency management officials.

During:

  • Signs of a tornado include:  Dark (maybe green) sky, large hail, dark, low-lying cloud, rotating clouds, or a loud roar (like a freight train).
  • Take shelter!
    • If you are inside a structure, go to the designated shelter area (basement, safe room, cellar).  If there is no basement/cellar, go to the center-most area on the lowest level away from corners, windows, doors, or outside walls.  Use arms to protect head/neck.  Do not open windows.
    • If you are in a mobile home get out and seek sturdy shelter immediately, if in a vehicle immediately drive to the closest sturdy shelter.  If that is not possible, park the car and put your head down below windows and cover yourself with a coat or blanket.  You could also get out and lie in an area lower than the roadway and cover your head.  NEVER get under an overpass.  Watch for flying debris.
  • Do not try to outrun a tornado, especially in an urban area where it can be congested.

After:

  • Check for injuries and DO NOT move others that are seriously injured.
  • If trapped, attract attention so you can be found.
  • Be very careful when entering or exiting a damaged building.  This is how most injuries from tornadoes occur.
  • Stay away from downed power lines.
  • Cooperate with public safety officials.
  • If you are able, volunteer to assist police, firemen, or emergency relief organizations.

The Aftermath:

  • Be aware of hazards in or around your home.
  • If your home has significant damage, avoid further disaster by shutting off the homes electric and gas.
  • If you smell gas, call the gas company immediately, do not turn on lights, and do not do anything that would create a spark.  Then leave the home immediately.
  • Call Swartz Contracting to assess the damage and begin the process to get you back to normal as soon as possible!  800-462-1024

Water Damage + Time = MOLD! …Swartz Contracting is the Solution!

What is mold and where does it come from?

Mold grows where enough water is present for it to reproduce.  So if your home or business had recent water damage, mold could be a concern.  It eats the material it grows on and can have an unpleasant odor.  It spreads quickly if water is present (leaks or spills) or if there is high humidity.

Water problems should be fixed within 24-48 hours because mold can begin to grow in 48 hours.  The longer you wait the more mold you will have, and more mold = more money!  Though hard surface items can be cleaned, porous items must be removed.  Certified, experienced professionals like Swartz Contracting can properly assess such situations and clean, remove, and replace all affected areas as necessary.

What are the health effects of mold?

Some people have symptoms when exposed to mold.  These may include allergic reactions, irritation, asthma episodes, and respiratory problems that can lead to infection.  Exposure to airborne or high levels of mold can lead to reactions and health problems.  People with existing respiratory conditions, infants and children, the elderly, pregnant women, and immune compromised individuals are at an even higher risk of health effects from mold.  It is important to note though that if a mold problem exists, it should be taken care of immediately even if those exposed are considered healthy.

What kind of mold do I have?

There are hundreds of thousands of different kinds of molds.  No matter the color, it needs to be removed as soon as possible.  “Toxic” mold produces toxins for cells to break down.  One must touch, breathe, or swallow the mold to be affected.  Not all molds contain toxins.

If you have water damage or mold due to water problems, trust the professionals.  Trust Swartz Contracting.  Our #1 goal is to rebuild your dreams and restore your confidence.  We treat every situation with the utmost care and restore your property to its pre-loss condition as quickly as possible.  Call us today for a free quote!  800-462-1024

Thinking about Remodeling?

Sooner or later every homeowner will find the need to make major home improvements or a complete remodel.  With spring just around the corner, now is the time to decide which areas of the home may need some attention to begin the planning process.  The reasons for a remodel are varied, but every project deserves the proper attention and skill because a home, in many cases, is one’s most valued asset.

Taking on such projects can be easy if you have the knowledge, experience, and tools, but it is usually best to trust a professional.  Hiring a professional contractor will put less stress on the home owner and probably avoid unnecessary disasters that may occur if they would take on a project on their own.   If you hire a good contractor they should complete a project from start to finish in an efficient manner.

Swartz Contracting has many years of experience having completed thousands of jobs since 1987.   Once we start your project we stay on it until completion. To better serve you we offer online project updates for large projects so you can monitor your property’s progress directly from our website. Winter is Here, but Let’s Think Spring!

Winter weather is just now hitting us, but we can’t help but think about spring and the warmer weather it brings!  You may think we are daydreaming (Aren’t we all!?), but it is a good idea to plan ahead and prepare now so you can enjoy spring when it comes.  By spacing out the things on your to-do list, it will be easy to accomplish them all by the time warmer weather is upon us.

Exterior:

  • Replace any cracked caulking around doors and windows.
  • Replace old weather stripping.
  • Replace old, damaged garden hoses and tools (shovels, gloves, rakes, etc)
  • Clean up any debris that has blown into the yard or is left over from fall (leaves).
  • Plan where you want your garden and what you want planted.

Interior:

  • Schedule for a spring HVAC inspection.
  • Check all air filters.
  • Begin interior spring cleaning (windows, ceiling fans, kitchen appliances & cabinets, the grill, medicine cabinets, etc)
  • Test all emergency systems: home security alarm, smoke fire & carbon monoxide alarms, fire extinguisher)

Now is also a good time to begin thinking about any remodeling that may need done for 2012.  Is there a room you’ve been itching to bring up-to-date?  An addition you would like to build?  A bathroom or kitchen that needs a make-over?   This all requires planning and part of this is figuring what fits into your budget and schedule.  Swartz Contracting is available any time of the year to answer any questions and provide free estimates!

Just think of how rewarding it will be if these tasks are all completed in the next three months.  This maintenance is important for every home, especially those going on the market in the near future.  All the more reason to think spring this winter!

Winter Home Maintenance Tips

Yes, it’s cold outside, but your home needs attention in the winter just like it would during the spring and summer months.  Now that the holidays are behind us, we can focus in on keeping our homes safe, warm, and energy efficient.  A well-maintained home is more likely to make it through winter problem-free.

Exterior & Yard Care

Your yard and exterior of your home need attention during winter months.  Aside from shoveling, there are other chores to do outside the home during winter.  Make sure branches from trees or shrubs are kept away from the house to avoid damage when ice forms.  Check your roof for loose or missing shingles, or ice dams.  You also want to make sure there are no cracks or openings around the home’s foundation or other areas such as doors.  Pests will try to seek shelter where it is warm, and if you have an opening they will attempt to make your house their home.  Any openings will need to be sealed.  When snow falls and piles up around your home, make sure you clear it off of your gas meter, away from basement windows, and away from dryer exhaust vents.

Pipe Protection

Pipes that are located in attics, crawl spaces, basements, and near outer walls are prone to freezing.  These pipes should be properly insulated to help prevent freezing, but if the forecast calls for an extreme drop in temperatures and you know you have pipes that are likely to freeze, let the water drip from that faucet overnight.  You may also want to open the cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes for that sink.

Energy Efficiency

HVAC filters need to be changed every month during the winter.  Your heater will be running almost constantly during these cold months, so mark your calendar as a reminder to change the filter regularly.  Heat rises, so check your attic to make sure none of the heat you are paying for is leaking into the attic through your ceilings.  Seal any openings and apply more insulation where needed.  It is also important to make sure the attic is properly ventilated.

Drafty windows are a common problem in the winter.  If your windows are not double-paned, be sure to take out the screens and put in the storm windows.  If you can feel cold air coming in from the windows, purchase plastic sheet kits at your local hardware or home improvement store.  These kits are highly effective and commonly used for the winter season.

Emergency Preparedness

Winter storms can cause power outages and snow-ins, so take the time to prepare your family for such emergencies.  Recommended items to have ready in your home include:  flashlights, bottled water, nonperishable food items, blankets, phone numbers of utility companies, battery backup for the computer and other important electronics, first-aid kit, and a generator with available fuel.
